Косвенная речь (The Indirect Speech)

Косвенная речь – это форма передачи текста, когда информация сообщается со слов другого человека (в отличие от прямой речи). Такие предложения почти всегда употребляются в разговорном английском. При этом допускается пересказ чужой речи своими словами.

Как и в русском языке, предложения, содержащие косвенную речь, становятся сложными: сложносочиненными, сложноподчиненными или бессоюзными сложными. Однако важным является тот факт, что в английском языке действует закон согласования времен, согласно которому время глагольного сказуемого придаточного сложноподчиненного предложения зависит от времени глагольного сказуемого главного предложения. Кроме того, существуют и другие аспекты, которые необходимо учитывать, передавая чужую речь своими словами, поскольку в противном случае велика вероятность искажения смысла сказанного и неправильного понимания предложения собеседником или читателем.

Так, в частности, если глагол, передающий нам слова говорящего, стоит в форме прошедшего времени (т.е. told, said, asked и т.п.), то часть предложения, которая собственно содержит слова говорящего, также будет в форме прошедшего времени. Таким образом, мы как бы делаем «шаг назад» от формы глагола в начальном предложении.

  • Например: He said the exam was not difficult. – Он сказал, что экзамен был не  сложным.

Если глагол, передающий нам слова говорящего, стоит в форме настоящего простого, настоящего совершенного или будущего времени (например, says), то временная форма глагола, стоящего в части предложения, которая собственно содержит слова говорящего, остается без изменения.

  • Например: He says the exam is difficult. – Он говорит, что экзамен сложный.

Если мы передаем чьи-то слова, содержащие неоспоримые факты, то в части предложения, которая собственно содержит слова говорящего, также сохраняется форма настоящего времени.

  • Например: The teacher said that this grammar rule is very important. – Учитель сказал, что это грамматическое правило – очень важное.

Когда предложение преобразуется из прямой речи в косвенную речь, зачастую необходимо заменить местоимение, чтобы оно совпадало по форме с подлежащим.

В предложениях с косвенной речью важно заменять наречия времени таким образом, чтобы они совпадали с моментом речи:

  • today, tonight – that day, that night;
  • tomorrow – the day after, the next day, the following day;
  • yesterday – the day before (the previous day);
  • now – then (at that time / immediately);
  • this week – that week;
  • next week – the week after (the following week);
  • last week – the week before (the previous week);
  • ago – before;
  • here – there.

Если же посредством косвенной речи передается вопросительное предложение, то особое внимание нужно обращать на соединительные союзы и порядок слов в предложении. При передаче общих вопросов, предполагающих возможность ответа по типу «да» или «нет», вопрос со словами автора соединяется при помощи союза ‘if’, который не переводится на русский язык дословно («если»). Если же мы передаем вопросы, использующие вопросительные слова (why, where, when и т.д.), мы используем это вопросительное слово.

Для того чтобы показать, какие изменения происходят в предложении, когда прямая речь преобразуется в косвенную при употреблении формы прошедшего времени глаголов-сказуемых, мы составили таблицу, в которой привели описание каждой из возможных речевых ситуаций с трансформацией разных времен глагола в прошедшее время, а также принципов использования модальных глаголов в процессе передачи прямой речи в косвенную.

Обратите внимание: Past Indefinite, Present Perfect и Past Perfect в косвенной речи переходят в Past Perfect.
