Paris is the capital and largest city of France. It is situated in the north of France on the banks of the river Seine. The population of Paris is about 2,200,000 people. Paris is also the centre of the 12 million Paris region, which makes it one of the most populated metropolitan areas in Europe.
Paris is one of the world’s leading business and cultural centres. It also plays a great role in politics, science, education, media, entertainment and fashion. The Paris economy is made up of two sectors: the service and the industrial with automobiles, aeronautics and electronics industries being the chief ones.
Paris is a unique tourist destination. 44 million tourists visit Paris and the surroundings every year. The French Kings, who governed France until 1848, left many beautiful buildings, such as the Palace of Versailles and the Louvre Palace. Paris is well renowned for its monuments, museums, theatres, restaurants, and urban landscape. Among most famous city’s landmarks are the 12th century cathedral Notre Dame de Paris, the Napoleonic Arc de Triomphe and the 19th century Eiffel Tower. The oldest gardens are the Tuileries Garden, made in the 16th century on the bank of the Seine near the Louvre and the Left Bank Luxembourg Garden. One of the best known museums is the Louvre Museum housing lots of masterpieces of art. Among other highly visited places are Disneylans, Centre Pompidou and Cite des Sciences.
It should be mentioned that Paris is a world capital city of shopping and fashion. It is home for such top brands as Channel, Dior, Vuitton, Yves Saint-Laurent, Lacroix and many others.
Paris is known worldwide as the city of great cuisine. The tradition of good food prevails in most restaurants, including gastronomic restaurants and family style places.
