New York
New York is the largest city in the United States and one of the largest in the world. It is situated in the south-east of New York State, in the place where the Hudson River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The population of the city is about 12 million people with lots of them being immigrants from different countries if the world.
New York is made up of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Richmond.
New York is an important industrial and cultural centre of the country. Manhattan is the place where most business is held. Wall Street with its sky-scrapers is known as the busiest street in the USA. If you want to see the latest plays and shows, you should go to Broadway, which is the centre of numerous theatres and nightlife. Another famous street is Fifth Avenue, full of hotels and clubs; it’s also the best place for doing shopping.
There are a lot of world-famous museums, art galleries, libraries, zoos and botanical gardens in New York. We can point out such places of interest as the Statue of Liberty (presented to the US by France in 1886), the United Nations Building, Columbia University, City Hall, New York Public Library, the Empire State Building, the World Trade Centre, which is 110 stories high, and many others.
New York is the city that never sleeps. Different restaurants, clubs, cinemas, shops and drugstores welcome visitors 24 hours a day.
New York is a leading manufacturing centre. Its main industries include clothing, printing and publishing. It’s also the largest port in the country with more than half the trade going through the city. New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport is one of the busiest in the world.
New York is considered to be the financial capital of the world. The United Nations has its headquarters in Manhattan.
This city is highly attractive for tourists.
