Moscow is the capital of Russia. This ancient city is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It’s situated on the banks of the Moskva River occupying the territory of more than 9 hundred square kilometers. Moscow is the seventh largest city in the world. The population of Moscow is about 10 million people.
Moscow was founded by the prince Yury Dolgoruky in 1147. It has a long and interesting history. Several times Moscow was ruined and restored.
Moscow is considered to be “a port of five seas” because there are ships and boats coming from the Baltic, the White, the Caspian, the Black seas and the sea of Azov.
Moscow is a major political, economic, cultural, religious, financial, educational, and transportation centre of Russia and the world.
The heart of the city is the Kremlin, which is a masterpiece of Russian architecture. Its main tower, the Spasskaya Tower is the symbol of the country. The Kremlin is also the seat of the Russian Federal Government. One can see a lot on the territory of the Kremlin: the Bell Tower of Ivan the Great, the Tzar-Cannon and the Tzar-Bell, the History Museum and St. Basil’s cathedral, built in the 16th century.
There are lots of museums, theatres and other places of interest in Moscow. Among the most popular ones we can point out the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, the State Tretyakov Gallery, Andrei Rublev Museum of Early Russian Art, Mikhail Glinka Museum of Musical Culture and the Bolshoi Opera House.
There are a great number of universities in Moscow. The largest one, named after an outstanding scientist Mikhail Lomonosov, is situated on Vorobyovy Hills and has 36 stories.
Being a great economic centre, Moscow is home to lots of scientific institutions and numerous sport facilities. There is a complex transport system in the city that includes four international airports, nine railroad terminals and the world’s second busiest metro system, famous for its architecture and artwork. Primary industries in Moscow are chemical, metallurgy, food, textile, furniture, energy production, software development and machinery.
